Stephanie Rivera Berruz is a Puerto Rican philosopher and Associate Professor of Philosophy at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her research is interdisciplinary, focusing on Latin American philosophy, Caribbean philosophy, Latinx/Latina feminisms, philosophy of race, gender, and sexuality, historiography, social identity, and political philosophy. She examines themes such as recognition and identity in Latin American thought, the intersections of colonialism and marginalization, radical praxis in feminist traditions, and the recovery of underrepresented voices in philosophical canons.
She earned her PhD in Philosophy from the University at Buffalo (SUNY) in 2014, working under Jorge J.E. Gracia, and has received awards including the Woodrow Wilson Career Enhancement Fellowship (2017–2018) and the Way Klingler Young Scholar Award (2021) for her contributions to Latinx feminisms and related fields.
Her notable publications include co-editing Comparative Studies in Asian and Latin American Philosophies (2018, with Leah Kalmanson), contributing the entry on “Latin American Feminism” to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (2018, revised 2023), and articles in journals such as the Inter-American Journal of Philosophy (e.g., “Extending into Space: The Materiality of Language and the Arrival of Latina/o Bodies,” 2014), Hypatia, Genealogy, Essays in Philosophy, and Comparative Philosophy (e.g., “The Quest for Recognition: The Case of Latin American Philosophy,” 2019). She has also written on figures like Luisa Capetillo and Ofelia Rodríguez Acosta, emphasizing radical interventions in gender, politics, and liberation. Her scholarship bridges Latin American/Caribbean traditions with contemporary issues of identity, recognition, and social justice, often highlighting their relevance to broader feminist and anti-colonial discourses.
