Susana Nuccetelli is an Argentine-born philosopher and Professor of Philosophy at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, where she has taught for many years. Her research specializes in Latin American and Latino philosophy, ethics (including metaethics and normative ethics), and related areas such as bioethics, epistemology, informal logic, and philosophy of mind. She explores the nature, history, and distinctive contributions of Latin American thought, often treating it as a form of applied philosophy addressing cultural, political, and social issues like identity, justice, human rights, poverty, racism, gender equality, and liberation.
Born in Argentina on August 8, 1954, she earned her PhD in Philosophy from the City University of New York Graduate Center. She is married to philosopher Gary Seay, with whom she has collaborated on several projects.
Her influential books include An Introduction to Latin American Philosophy (Cambridge University Press, 2020), which provides a comprehensive overview of the field’s central topics, “isms” (e.g., positivism, Marxism, liberationism, Arielism, modest/immodest feminisms), and its applied focus on Latin American culture and politics; Latin American Thought: Philosophical Problems and Arguments (2002); and co-edited/co-authored volumes such as Latin American Philosophy: An Introduction with Readings (2004, with Gary Seay) and contributions to A Companion to Latin American Philosophy. She has published numerous articles in journals including the Inter-American Journal of Philosophy (e.g., on Jorge Gracia’s ethnic philosophy approach and other topics), Metaphilosophy, and others, often engaging with debates on whether Latin American thought constitutes “philosophy” proper, feminist perspectives, and semantic externalism.
Articles and papers published in this journal include:
- Review of: Rick Anthony López. Crafting Mexico: Intellectuals, Artisans, and the State after the Revolution (Volume 2, Issue 2 – Fall, 2011)
- “Gracia on Ethnic Philosophy” (Volume 1, Issue 1 – Fall, 2010)
